Visit to Bakersville

When we left the house on this gray, drizzly Sunday, our only destination was a little stone house that is for sale.  We wanted to drive by and take a look, but we didn't have a destination in mind after that.  We headed on down Highway 60 and saw a sign for Bakersville and Baker Creek Heirloom Seed store.  I have seen signs and heard about it and wanted to check it out.  I didn't think it would be open right now, but there were a few cars parked, so we got out to look around.
They sell heirloom seeds as their main business, but call this little village their labor of love.  Isn't it neat?
The seed store was open and there were quite a few people in there shopping for seeds.  The other little buildings didn't look open, but we saw some people walk in.  Sure enough...the door opened easily.  There was a little sign in each store to pay at the seed store.  What a trusting place!  The picture above is in the apothecary which sold all sorts of herbs and spices.
This is the inside of the general store...also with a sign to pay in the seed store.  Such cool buildings, and I really enjoyed all the old things they decorated with.
The bakery was the first place we went in, and I was a little unsure of whether I was even supposed to be inside.  It looks old on the outside, but smells like fresh wood inside.
The sheep were almost as interested in Riley as he was in them!  I've looked at their website since we've been home (www.rareseeds.com) and found that it's not always as unpopulated as it was today!  The first Sunday of every month March-September they hold Heritage Day Festivals.  I'm really looking forward to going back on a sunny day!
We bought a little bag of cloves for simmering with apples and orange peel on the stove.  It will smell so good.  We took the scenic drive back to the highway and saw several horses and buggies carrying Amish families, and quite a few Amish homes.  It was a great afternoon!

What an awesome place! It reminds me of Storey, Indiana which is where our youngest daughter got married.

Once upon a time Storey was a town, now all the little buildings make up a "get away" place where there is no cell phone service and no TV.

Maybe you remember my pictures from that wedding - - - we were already bloggy friends by then (Sept of 2010)

I have always wanted to go there. Your drives are a lot like ours (we never know where we will end up -- it's always an adventure.
